The Boy and The Heron is set to make its hotly anticipated North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7. The festival will host the debut of Miyazaki’s final feature, spurring excitement for the movie’s wider theatrical release.

GKIDS Nabbed the North American Distribution Rights

GKIDS Films secured the North American distribution rights for The Boy and The Heron, as they have for many past Studio Ghibli classics. An exact release date is still unannounced, but the movie will arrive in theaters later in 2023 following its TIFF showing.

Digital Release Will Likely Follow Theatrical Run

Eager Miyazaki fans may be bummed to hear that The Boy and The Heron aren’t yet available on any streaming platforms. Outside of the US, Ghibli has an exclusive deal with Netflix. HBO Max owns the American streaming rights. So we’ll probably have to wait until after the theatrical run wraps up before The Boy and The Heron hits the web.
