Hayao Miyazaki The Boy and the Heron film North American Premiere Details
After years of eager anticipation, Miyazaki’s final film finally hit theaters in his native Japan on July 16, 2023. By all accounts, it was a critical and commercial smash hit. True to form, Studio Ghibli kept plot details and visuals closely guarded leading up to release. We only got a tiny sneak peek at the magical imagery through a limited promotional booklet. But the four film stills it contained were enough to showcase Miyazaki’s signature artistry and meticulous attention to detail.
North American Miyazaki Fans Can Catch It This September at TIFF
While Japanese fans got first dibs, North Americans will soon have a chance to experience Miyazaki’s swan song. The Boy and The Heron is set to make its hotly anticipated North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7. The festival will host the debut of Miyazaki’s final feature, spurring excitement for the movie’s wider theatrical release.
GKIDS Nabbed the North American Distribution Rights
GKIDS Films secured the North American distribution rights for The Boy and The Heron, as they have for many past Studio Ghibli classics. An exact release date is still unannounced, but the movie will arrive in theaters later in 2023 following its TIFF showing.
Digital Release Will Likely Follow Theatrical Run
Eager Miyazaki fans may be bummed to hear that The Boy and The Heron aren’t yet available on any streaming platforms. Outside of the US, Ghibli has an exclusive deal with Netflix. HBO Max owns the American streaming rights. So we’ll probably have to wait until after the theatrical run wraps up before The Boy and The Heron hits the web.
Final Film From an Animation Pioneer
As Miyazaki’s curtain call, hopes are sky-high for The Boy and The Heron. But early reviews and box office numbers out of Japan suggest he’ll stick the landing. While story details remain few and far between for now, fans can take comfort in knowing they’ll soon get to see the work of a true artisan one last time when it premieres stateside at TIFF.
