What Will “The Color Purple” Be About?
“The Color Purple” is based on a book written by Alice Walker in 1982. The story follows Celie, a black woman in the early 1900s, who suffers abuse from her father and husband. In 1985, Steven Spielberg turned this book into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Laurence Fishburne. The film got 11 Oscar nominations, even for best picture.

Later, in 2004, “The Color Purple” became a musical and was nominated for Tony Awards. Marsha Norman wrote the play, and the music and lyrics were by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell, and Alee Willis. This musical was loved by critics and got 11 Tony nominations.
This year, Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are remaking “The Color Purple” into a musical movie. It will be a bold new take on the beloved classic, and will still highlight the powerful coming-of-age story of Celie Harris. The film will explore themes of struggle, strength, and empowerment as Celie navigates her challenging journey. Additionally, the story will also showcase sisterhood and the pursuit of happiness in the face of societal oppression.

Oprah Winfrey, who is producing the upcoming movie, talked about how significant it is to bring back a new version of “The Colour Purple” after all these years. “I can’t tell you what a full-circle moment it is,” she said reflecting on her time in the original 1985 movie. She continued, “The reason why this film is so important is because as long as there’s a need for self-discovery, self-empowerment, victory is someone’s life, a need for people to know what it feels like to be loved up and be made whole through somebody else’s love, there will be a need for ‘The Colour Purple.'”

When Can We Expect “The Color Purple” to Hit the Screen?
Last month, Warner Bros. gave a special sneak peek of “The Color Purple” to the distributors at CinemaCon. Now, they’ve just shared the very first trailer of the movie with everyone. It’s going to come out in North America on Christmas Day, December 25, and it will premiere globally starting on January 18, 2024. Watch the trailer below:
Blitz Bazawule, who co-directed Beyoncé’s “Black Is King”, replied when asked about his upcoming project, “As Oprah said, the context of ‘The Colour Purple’ itself is evergreen. As long as there continue to be issues of gender bias, abuse, racial inequality, and penal systems that are biased, all these things are central to what ‘The Colour Purple’ is, and if you look out your window, it’s happening today.”
